Bicheno is not a household name like other tourist hotspots and Tasmania isn't usually known for its pleasant climate. These are both good reasons for discovering the town of Bicheno, on the east coast of Tasmania. While this tiny crayfishing town with a population of slightly below 650 is not on the general tourist's list of "must see" locations, it is on the "must go back and stay longer" list of everyone who has been there.
Bicheno is not hard to find. It's only 115 miles (185 kilometers) northeast of Tasmania's capital city, Hobart, but many overseas visitors to Tasmania overlook it. The northeast coastline of Tasmania is warmer and much more sheltered than other parts of the island and is blessed with an wealth of wildlife, both in the water and on land. Bicheno, located on the northern edge of the Freycinet Peninsula, is a Tasmanian gem, with fantastic beaches, an abundance of sea life and spectacular scenery at its doorstep.
One of the most popular attractions for the whole family in Bicheno is the Penguin Tour. Fairy Penguins are beautiful "miniature" penguins that can best be seen at sunset when they come home from a day of fishing out at sea. The guided fairy penguin tours are designed having the penguins' welfare foremost in mind. While observing them is no threat to them, free access to the fairy penguins threatens their habitat and will cause them to look somewhere else for a home. By operating guided tours led by professionals, many visitors can enjoy the privilege of seeing the penguins going about their daily business in their natural habitat. It is a "win win" situation for both the viewers as well as the fairy penguins.
Governor Island Marine Park is well-known to divers round the world. From Bicheno, experienced divers can be taken to the amazing dive spots around Governor Island to explore the rocky sea floor some 100 feet (30 meters) beneath the surface. While in the past, the rock lobsters these waters are so famous for almost vanished, since it was declared a protected Marine Park, they've returned in great quantity. While you swim through schools of butterfly perch and explore the nooks and crannies among the rocks, you discover an incredible range of invertebrates, sponges and other fascinating ocean life. Less experienced divers are taken to neighboring Bird Rock to discover underwater caves and overhangs with the aid of flashlights.
Back on land, Bicheno is the starting point for a hike to the renowned Wineglass Bay lookout. The view is spectacular and the long silvery sands of Wineglass Bay are rated as one of the top 10 beaches in the world by Outside magazine. Wineglass Bay is located in Freycinet Peninsula National Park. The long, narrow Freycinet Peninsula is home to unique species of birdlife, like the white bellied sea eagle and Australasian gannet, which makes it a sought after destination for bird lovers from around the world.
Bicheno isn't the kind of town you want to visit for just a day. Once you get there, you will not wish to leave. When you see the types of Bicheno accommodations that are available, you will never wish to leave. Choose between caravan and tent parks, farm stay accommodation, resorts, lodges, backpackers hotels and charming bed and breakfast accommodations. Be ready to have the time of your life discovering the magic of Bicheno and the rest of the northeast coast of Tasmania. You will not believe your eyes.
