The beautiful coastal town of Yamba on the NSW mid-north coast has been an insider's secret for generations. Families know it to be an ideal vacation spot; fishermen know it to be a fantastic area for fishing; and surfers know that it has some of the best uncrowded surfing waves in the country. They all keep their secret to themselves, though. Now that Stanford University has declared Yamba to have the world's most perfect climate and a prestigious Australian magazine has declared it the Number One best town in Australia, the secret is out.

That Yamba would win out over a Queensland tropical destination might surprise you. When you think about it, though, there is such a thing as too tropical. Do you want to go someplace where it's too hot and humid to enjoy the midday sun or where you have to worry about tropical thunderstorms? Wouldn't you rather go someplace where you felt perfectly comfortable in a tee shirt and shorts throughout the year and where the rains seemed to come on schedule whenever the lush surrounding countryside needed watering? That's what the weather is like in Yamba.

What makes a town the best in Australia. Yamba beat out a plethora of more glamorous competitors for this position, including Byron Bay. What appealed to both residents and visitors about Yamba was that while it lacked crowds and glitz and glamour, it still had everything to offer that more crowded resort communities have.

Yamba has everything to offer its more "sophisticated" rivals have, without any of their drawbacks. What it doesn't have is crass commercialism or a pretentious atmosphere. There's no need to feel like you have to dress up to go out: your baggy shorts, tee-shirt and flip-flops are welcome even in Yamba's best restaurants and cafes.

Yamba today has been compared to the Byron Bay of twenty years ago. It was that Byron Bay that made it so popular. The population consisted of laid back bohemians and surfers who enjoyed your company, but didn't compete for your dollars. Back then, Byron wasn't home to the rich and famous: it was home to down to earth, "fair dinkum" Aussies who really knew the meaning of the word "hospitality." Twenty years ago, when you wanted to catch a few waves in Byron Bay, you could do so without having to fight for them. You still can in Yamba.

It's not that Yamba doesn't have its upmarket amenities. If you want to enjoy a perfect cappuccino accompanied by a great meal in an alfresco café, you can easily find it in Yamba. If you like shopping for unusual craftsman made gifts and souvenirs, there are plenty of great shops in Yamba to explore. If you want entertainment in the evening, there's no shortage of that either. What's different about Yamba is its lack of pretentious and the slow, relaxed pace of life in the town.

The same is true of a Yamba accommodation. Take your pick of anything from a well-appointed beachside campground to a sumptuous resort and spa. In either case, you will feel welcome and taken care of. If you really want to relax, come to Yamba. Any time of the year the weather is perfect and the locals are there to greet you.
