As his ship approached Magnetic Island in 1770, Captain Cook noticed that his compass seemed to go haywire. Believing the island responsible, he speculated that it must emit a magnetic force of some kind. Although his theory has since been proved wrong, the name "Magnetic Island" has stuck ever since.
Maybe a better name for Magnetic Island would be Magic Island. Neither a compass nor any other instrument can measure the "force" of this magic, but you definitely feel it when you're in the vicinity of the island. What is the magic?
Of course, its location on the Great Barrier Reef has something to do with it, but there are many wonderful islands on the Reef. What sets this one apart from the rest? One of its attractions is its location. Clearly visible from Townsville, it would be difficult not to be drawn to this mysterious looking, tree covered, and mountainous island. Looking at it from a distance, the adventurous traveler would naturally want to explore some of its over 200 natural coves or set out into its interior. Since over half of the island is a protected National Park, there is plenty of scope for exploration.
If you like roughing it, you can explore much of the island on foot, on a mountain bike or even in a sea kayak. If motorized transportation is more to your liking, then rent a dirt bike, a 4WD vehicle or even a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. On the water, you have your choice between exploring beneath the surface with snorkel or scuba gear or enjoying the water by sea kayak, jet ski or even aboard a luxury yacht.
The Great Barrier Reef islands have a reputation for being for the super rich only. On a few islands that may be the case, but not on Magnetic Island. Actually, Magnetic Island is set up for every budget and lifestyle and includes a variety of budget accommodations, including backpacker lodges. The same thing is true of dining. If you're on a budget, eat where the locals eat at one of the great restaurants or cafes in any of the 4 larger residential villages on the island.
If you do want a luxurious accommodation on Magnetic Island, you won't be disappointed, either. Especially in more recent years, luxury accommodations have been developed on the island. Then there are the day spas and other businesses that have been set up to help make your trip to this special island even more memorable.
For all the island has to offer, Magnetic Island's greatest attraction may be the natural feel of the island. While many resorts make you feel like you are just a customer, on Magnetic Island you feel like you're a welcome guest. You can get to know the colourful locals in person or you can escape into nature and see no one at all, if that's your preference.
The best way to describe the year 'round climate on Magnetic Island is "balmy". There is no best time to visit the island: any time is the best time. It's probably best to book your Magnetic Island accommodation ahead of time, though, since it is a popular Australian getaway destination all year 'round.
